Lent and Yoga

(Yoga Sutra II.1-3)
Austerity, appropriate study of Scripture, and dedication to God comprise the yoga of action, which is for the purpose of cultivating absorption and for the purpose of diminishing the afflictions. Ignorance, ego-centeredness, desire, aversion, and longing for continuity are the five afflictions.

Lent is the 40 days before Easter. Many faiths let go of something in preparation for this special occasion in the faith world. Our whole study in final meditation will be about learning to let go through this season. So, whether you practice Lent, or whether you do not, come and see how learning to let go will benefit your body, mind, and spirit! See article below.

Ash Wednesday was February 13th and so began the season of Lent. I grew up a non-denominational Christian and had little experience with Lent. In fact, I remember working at a bookstore and wondering why, one particular evening, about a quarter of all our customers had dark crosses smeared on their foreheads. What I learned later on after gaining a few wonderful Catholic friends is that it is a ritual of Ash Wednesday mass in which ashes from the previous year’s Palm Sunday are marked on the believer. It signifies mourning and repentance. Many observers spend the next 40 days until Easter Sunday fasting and praying. So enough with the history lesson… Why observe this holiday if you’re not religious? A few reasons…
Because it will help you be a better person. What’s cool about Lent is that it falls just about the time that our New Year’s resolutions have fallen to the wayside. Use Lent as a reminder of all the things you wanted to do to make 2013 a better year. It’s your second chance.
Because grief is good. Part of Lent observance is mourning. I’m not saying that everyone should go around sad and pitiful for a month and a half, but Lent may be a good time to dig deep into your heart about your losses. One of the biggest issues people don’t even realize that they have is a lack of grief. You lost a job, a spouse, a friend, or even a period of time in your life that you enjoyed is over. Did you properly grieve it? A lot of times, we walk around still carrying the weight of something we’ve lost. Here’s something: Write loss a letter. Whatever it is that you’ve lost, even if it’s not a person, write it a letter. Express how you feel about it and how you miss the good times. Share any hurt or pain its loss has caused… Then throw it away. When you do that, you release yourself from its weight and you can truly move on.
Because repentance means saying, “I’m sorry”. Lent is a good time to apologize to anyone you’ve wronged. None of us are perfect and we’ve hurt people in our lives. It takes a brave person to admit he or she is wrong. Be that brave person this season.
Because it’s also about forgiveness, and we all need to forgive someone. Just like you need to apologize, chances are that you also need to forgive someone else’s offenses. It could be a kid who was mean to you in school more than 30 years ago or an ex-spouse who still causes you trouble. It doesn’t matter. Lent is a time of forgiveness, so let go. The bitterness you hold in your heart for that person hurts no one but yourself. Release it this season; make the conscious effort to do so (every day, if you have to).
Because fasting makes you awesome. Fasting is tough. It bends our will and puts the selfish, childish side of us in a corner. It requires self-discipline and a certain strength of character. Not everyone can give up something that they love. But if you really want to see exactly what you’re made up, I challenge you to give up one luxury. Just one. Coffee, Facebook, cookies, swearing, whatever you indulge in. It’s not only a good way to kick a bad habit, but it shows you just how tough you really are.
Because sacrifice is good for the soul. Many religions require and/or advocate fasting. Religions that differ vastly on the creation of the world or morality issues often times agree that sacrifice is good for a human being’s spirit. It expands you somehow on the inside. Why? Because it gives your body and brain a vacation. You get to operate out of something bigger that’s on the inside.
No matter what you believe, Lent is a season for all of us. We can reflect, re-choose, and re-shape ourselves and our futures. Think about it. - Jennifer Jones

Compassion for Self

B. H. Gunartana, from his book Eight Mindful Steps To Happiness, said,
"It is impossible to practice genuine compassion for others without the foundation of self-compassion. If we try to act compassionately out of a sense of personal unworthiness or the belief that others are more important than we are, the true source of our actions is aversion for ourselves, not compassion for others. Similarly, if we offer help out of a sense of cold superiority to those we are assisting, our actions may actually be motivated by pride. Genuine compassion arises from the tender heart we feel for our our own suffering, which we then see mirrored in the suffering of others. So compassion, grounded in wholesome self-love, motivates us to reach out sincerely to help."
Dalai Lama said,
“It is not enough to be compassionate. You must act. There are two aspects to action. One is to overcome the distortions and afflictions of your own mind… The other is more social, more public. When something needs to be done in the world to rectify the wrongs, if one is really concerned with benefiting others, one needs to be engaged, involved.”
Last week we discussed the Yamas and Niyamas of Patajali's Yoga Sutras, and today's update is about the asanas or yoga postures. Many people are attracted to yoga because of the physical workout that you receive when you practice. Often times their response to any teaching is for the instructor to "move on, stop talking, and teach me a new pose." However, the whole purpose of the yoga postures is to actually prepare you for corpse pose in the last five minutes. It is the practice of letting go similar to what happens when our physical bodies expire. While the physical workout is most enjoyable, can help you tone, lose weight, and be more flexible, yoga is a mind/body/spirit practice.

The purpose of the asanas is to help us find a comfortable seat for meditation. Patanjali said that we should find "steadiness and ease" (sthira sukham asanam Sutra 2.67) in every pose. Steadiness would refer to motionless strength, and ease would associate with our bodies comfortable and filled with easy breath. One of the things that attracted me to yoga back in the mid 90's was that yoga helped me to relax after the hard workout. When my mind relaxed, it became more tolerant. From tolerance I grew to accept myself.

Through acceptance, I finally found the ability to let go of the hard taskmaster who lived in my brain that kept me from compassion towards who Jeanne was supposed to be. I was supposed to be perfect, and without knowing it, I expected the same of others. Now I know that the self-same ruler that I use for myself is the stick that I measure others with; for, I cannot love others without loving myself. Yoga has taught me the same lesson that Jesus taught, "Love your neighbor as yourself."

As I let go of my own ego, competitive nature, or comparison, then and only then, can I truly love others. I begin to realize that even if I only practice 60 minutes of one familiar pose, my goal is to find sthira sukham asanam in that one yoga move.

 Steadiness, strength, isometric hold
 + flexibility, ease,
comfort + asana with breath
= YOGA

Letting go of my expectations will help me live my yoga off the mat and find greater compassion for others from my own heart. The next time you practice a pose try breathing out the words "I let go. I let be." Joy and sorrow, happiness and grief, it is all about learning to let go and learning to simply be.

40 Tips for Weight Loss - New Workshop Coming in March!

  • Tip #1:  Drink warm water.
  • Tip #2:  Chew your food; slow down.
  • Tip #3:  More yoga (by the way wait two hours after eating to practice yoga - down dogs are not pleasant after eating).
  • Tip #4:  Eat 80% of your food intake by 2:00 p.m.  Ease on down for supper - eat light.
  • Tip #5:  Have a seat to eat.
  • Tip #6:  Eat vegetables, and if you are still hungry - eat more veggies!  Get green and lean.
  • Tip #7:  Take a Breath Break  Sit quietly for as long as you can get away from the noise, busy-ness, and chaos of every day life.  Breathe.  In through the nose, out through the nose.  1:2 ratio.
  • Tip #8:  Try Apple Cider Vinegar (two teaspoons in an 8 ounce glass of water).
  • Tip #9:  If you make a mistake, just start again the very next meal.  Exercise the very next day.  Never allow days to go by where you look at your yoga mat or your tennis shoes and wonder when the last time was that you exercised for your well-being.
  • Tip #10:  Eat according to your own personal dosha's well-being.
  • Tip #11:  Energize Your Lungs.
  • Tip #12:  Energize Your Brain.
  • Tip #13:  Energize Your Intestines.
  • Tip #14:  Energize Your Liver.
  • Tip #15:  Energize Your Thyroid.
  • Tip #16:  Exercise for at least 30 minutes each day; optimally, you should work up to 50 to 70 minutes.  Bring your heart rate up and break a sweat.
  • Tip #17:  Ask for God's help.
  • Tip #18: Stop eating (the wrong things, not eating at all, or overeating) due to depression, despair, or discouragement.
  • Tip #19:  Think positive by changing one thought at a time.
  • Tip #20:  Drink a lot (not alcohol), preferably water.  "The general guideline is enough ounces equal to one-half your body weight. So if you weigh 150 lbs, drink 75 oz of liquid each day."  Janet Parachin
  • Tip #21:  Speaking of alcohol, we must face the facts that alcoholic beverages will slow down our weight loss.  Tip number twenty-one is "don't drink your calories."
  • Tip #22:  Find a Friend that you can share your journey with, exercise with, and call when the cravings are at their worst.
  • Tip #23:  Loneliness aggravates stress and overeating, eating foods that are toxic for us, or under-eating.  Get out of the house, out of the office, out of wherever we feel trapped and force ourselves to be around people who nurture us.
  • Tip #24:  25 Grams of Fiber!  Every day add foods that are high in fiber.  The "c" word (constipation) keeps toxins in our bodies.
  • Tip #25:  Everything in balance.  Keep your primary and secondary doshas (vata, pitta, or kapha) in a healthy place by eating on time, sleeping well, meditating for at least 5 minutes, and exercising every day.
  • Tip #26:  Do your yoga homework.
  • Tip #27:  Eat clean; abs are made in the kitchen!
  • Tip #28:  Protein counts!  Get it in whichever way you believe.  46 grams for women; 56 grams for men each day!
  • Tip #29:  Let go of your ego
  • Tip #30:  Men and Yoga.  Just do it!
  • Tip #31:  "Here comes the Judge!" Let it go.  Let it go.  Let it go.  No jealousy, no competition, no comparison.
  • Tip #32:  Women and Yoga.  Why do I say "women?"  Men do multi-tasking, as well, and usually with the remote; but, women are famous for it.
  • Tip #33:  Patience is a virtue.  Give yourself the gift of time.
  • Tip #34:  Try partner yoga; it is a great way to build communication, trust, and yoga alignment.
  • Tip #35:  Sweet tooth - eat more fresh fruit to curb the sweet taste!
  • Tip #36:  Journaling helps you win.  If you write every single day, you will get to know yourself better and help yourself calm down after a frustrating day or before a day that is over-scheduled.
  • Tip #37:  Accountability is the way to keep you on track and out of trouble.
  • Tip #38:  A great recipe for disaster is eating nachos and buffalo wings at holiday get togethers!
  • Tip #39:  What to do before the party starts....exercise, eat normal meals, and watch out for grazing or starving yourself.
  • Tip #40:  Life coaching!  Come to the workshop on March 9th to hear Karen Kuykendall speak on the different stages of a woman's life.  I will be teaching YIN yoga poses (including Moon Salutes).  Yin Yoga poses help to calm our sympathetic nervous system down with forward folding.  Men and women are welcome to attend.  Women will understand themselves better, and men will try!

Two Chair Classes on Tuesdays and Thursdays Each Week at NOON!

Yoga, unlike other physical activities, emphasizes self-acceptance,
which is something that's largely missing for those of us who dislike our bodies.
The program in our heads—I'm not pretty enough, thin enough, tall enough—builds in volume over years
until it's practically the only radio station playing.
Odd as it seems, the vessel that keeps us alive, that nourishes us, begins to get nothing but our scorn in return.
Yoga isn't a miracle.
But it does allow us to recognize the miracle we inhabit,
to move from a world that emphasizes physical beauty
and ideal body shapes into one that teaches us to honor the power our body offers.  Yoga Journal

Dear Friends,
Our chair yoga classes which are taught by Debbie Seals are doing well.  We are moving them to noon on Tuesday and Thursday (on January 29th).  This is a "Bring a Friend for Free" type of class.  If you know of someone who would enjoy a gentle yoga practice at an easier pace with the benefit of a chair, please invite them to class.  I like the joint movement and range of motion elements of the practice.  Debbie does an excellent job with this class, and I hope you will consider adding them to your week.
Vinyasa Flow for Beginners and Intermediates will begin on Tuesday and (on January 31st) Thursdays at 10:00 a.m.   Unless I am out of town, I will be the teacher of this practice of breath and movement.  If you want a heated practice with some Chaturangas, this might be the class for you!  We will also be doing a lot of standing postures and balancing practice.
Some of you have mentioned adding a "Kundalini" class back into the schedule!  After the Weight Winners and Ayurveda Overcomers complete their workshop series, we will make it our 10:30 a.m. class on Saturday mornings.  It is fast, fun, and totally different than our regular Hatha Yoga practice.  This will begin in February on the 23rd.  Please let me know if this Kundalini practice is something you might enjoy.  Thank you.
Last Sunday afternoon we enjoyed a "photo shoot" with Jenipher Rowe.  She did an amazing collection of photographs which you will see on our Facebook postings andwww.tranquilityyogastudio.com  I am also building a website for my OSU class called, "Standing on the Shoulders of Giants in Learning."  This website will have yoga resources for you to check out if you are interested in learning more about postures, meditation, or practice.  It is not ready yet, but it is in the works.
Exciting things are going on at Tranquility Yoga in Owasso LLC!

The Invitation

The Invitation by Oriah, Mountain Dreamer

The Invitation by Oriah
 It doesn’t interest me
what you do for a living.
 I want to know
 what you ache for
and if you dare to dream
 of meeting your heart’s longing.

It doesn’t interest me
 how old you are.
 I want to know
if you will risk
looking like a fool
 for love
 for your dream
for the adventure of being alive.

It doesn’t interest me
 what planets are
squaring your moon...
 I want to know
 if you have touched
the centre of your own sorrow
 if you have been opened
 by life’s betrayals
or have become shrivelled and closed
 from fear of further pain.

I want to know
if you can sit with pain
 mine or your own
 without moving to hide it
 or fade it
 or fix it.

I want to know
if you can be with joy
 mine or your own
if you can dance with wildness
and let the ecstasy fill you
to the tips of your fingers and toes
 without cautioning us
 to be careful
 to be realistic
 to remember the limitations
 of being human.

It doesn’t interest me
if the story you are telling me
 is true.
I want to know if you can
 disappoint another
 to be true to yourself.
 If you can bear
 the accusation of betrayal
and not betray your own soul.
 If you can be faithless
 and therefore trustworthy.

I want to know if you can see Beauty
even when it is not pretty
 every day.
And if you can source your own life
 from its presence.

I want to know
if you can live with failure
 yours and mine
and still stand at the edge of the lake
and shout to the silver of the full moon,
 “Yes.”

It doesn’t interest me
 to know where you live
or how much money you have.

I want to know if you can get up
after the night of grief and despair
weary and bruised to the bone
and do what needs to be done
 to feed the children.

It doesn’t interest me
 who you know
or how you came to be here.

I want to know if you will stand
in the centre of the fire
 with me
 and not shrink back.

It doesn’t interest me
where or what or with whom
 you have studied.
 I want to know
what sustains you
 from the inside
 when all else falls away.

I want to know
 if you can be alone
with yourself
 and if you truly like
 the company you keep
 in the empty moments.
