P90X Creator, Tony Horton, and Yoga

Tony Horton is renowned as the creator and star of the P90X extreme home fitness system, but many don't know about his yoga side.  In the mid-1990's Horton discovered this form of exercise and it changed his life.  "I had heard of yoga," says Horton.  "But I thought it was silly."  Then a woman he was dating invited him to a hatha yoga class. "I had my b--- handed to me!"

Horton understood that being bad at something was a good thing.  And he began taking yoga classes regularly.  He noticed that not only did yoga improve his flexibility and range of motion, it gave him more endurance during sports, such as rock climbing and skiing.  "I found that yoga allowed me to push harder in all other aspects of fitness without getting hurt."  The practice of yoga is essential not only for one's physical well-being, but it can be used to deal with life stressors, such as being stuck in traffic or dealing with your boss.  With yoga, you are centered and connected.  FITNESS magazine

"I can do things at my age...not because I can do a bunch of pull-ups.  It's because I do yoga."  Tony Horton, age 54, (DOB July 2, 1958) Creator of P90X

Meditation, Mouth, and Muscle!
New class this week at 5:00 p.m. on Tuesday is learning to meditate As I told my RSU students yesterday when I taught the Dhyana theme class, meditation means the cultivation of silence. Several of my college students had lived on farms, and we discussed what the word "cultivating" meant.  Some said that it was putting the implement on the tractor and digging up hard, dry, overworked ground.  Then, we applied that definition to what meditation is and considered that analogy in our own lives.

This morning I saw a news clip on Channel 8 of a woman who had gained weight after losing it on the Biggest Loser's TV show.  She is now taking the weight back off with the idea of meditation practice, watching out what goes into her mouth as far as trigger foods of high carbohydrate with sugar or salt, and working out with muscle.  I believe that yoga can help with all three of these areas.  Meditation calms our minds and de-stresses us.  Yoga teaches us mindful eating of healthy food types.  Muscles are definitely enhanced as we lift our body weight and move with our Vinyasa flow format.

Join us this week for a Meditation Happy Hour class on Tuesday at 5:00 p.m. before the 6:00 p.m. practice.  If you have to be a few minutes late, just slip into the studio quietly get a blanket or block to sit on (no "thwapping" of the mat sounds, please) and begin along with us as we meditate until the 6:00 p.m. class.  I will teach you how to meditate or give prompts on your meditation time.

After the meditation practice is complete, you can get your mat for the 6 o'clock class or be on your way to your next destination.  One punch on your Tranquility Yoga card for meditation practice or two punches for meditation and class; you choose.  See the difference that cultivating silence can make in your life!  If you are on the Unlimited Tranquility Yoga plan for the month or half a year, just sign in!
